Joe started his DJ career spinning hard to mix Disco in 1978 in San Antonio Texas, Joe soon developed a seamless mixing style, taught to him by his brother. His soul moving music selection set him apart from most DJ’s at that time. In 1986, a Dallas nightclub recruiter offered Joe a DJ career in Dallas Texas. After the negotiation was done, Joe accepted and launched a relentless House Music campaign which was spoon fed to the Dallas club goers until it was fully accepted 3 years later, Today, Joe is well respected by other DJ’s as well as club owners and is always willing to fill your soul with what he loves, House Music.
As a child, Joe was influenced by the sounds of Motown and all the R & B that was being played on the radio. After watching the Jackson 5 debut on the Ed Sullivan Show, “back when 45’s and the 8 track tape were popular”, Joe immediately knew what he wanted to do with his future. It was all about the music. He started working hard, mowing lawns, just to save enough money to buy whatever records he had heard on the radio. Soon there after, he had an impressive record collection, which he studied nightly after school and all day every weekend. He also had a knack for which records sounded best, back, to back.
At the under age of 15, Joe stepped into his first night club (shhhh!). It was standing room only and he found himself standing behind the open aired DJ booth in the middle of the dance floor. Donna Summers’ - Macarthur Park was playing followed by The Gibson Brothers – Cuba and the people were eating it up. Throughout the night, the DJ was trying to blend the songs together but was having a hard time doing so. Talk about train wrecks. Needless to say, the pursuit for becoming a DJ was on.
As a DJ in the early 80’s, Joe started studying song structure and instrument placement in the music he was playing. Desperately wanting to learn how to make music, he would sit in with friends who had studio access and patiently absorbed all he could. Joe then learned the art of tape splicing and started remixing songs in that manner. He would then play the mixes at the clubs he was working and the dance floor response was very accepting. Soon, DJ’s around town were asking for those mixes but were denied. The mixes were exclusive and stayed in his collection. According to Joe, there is nothing worse than a copycat DJ.
As a producer, Joe strives on an organic sound. It must have some live element to it and not all digital. His production style has a mix of Jazz, Soul, Funk, Latin percussion, African rhythms, smooth and sexy bass lines, deep warm chords, strong horn arrangements and some seductive vocals that will melt you.
In 2000, Joe teamed up with his friend and local House music DJ, Warren Christie to form M St. Records. It was a short-lived venture but he managed to get a couple of releases out on his label with production partner, Face. The 1st release was in 2001, Castillo & Face – Baile Espania. His 2nd release was in 2002, Castillo & Face – Done Deal. Both received rave reviews in XLR8R, BPM and DJ Times magazine. Done Deal was also picked up and licensed by Sony Music Japan. Since then, Joe has been working with new and local musicians along with a few vocalist and will soon be releasing more grooving house music aimed directly at your soul. Stay tuned. |
