biography

Joshua Heath a.k.a Coldcuts, has been involved with music all his life, beginning early with guitar, and later moving to acoustic bass & trombone, and then electric bass & tuba. Joshua played in every band in high school on different instruments, but bass was his thing, playing jazz, classical, rock, gospel, & some hip hop. He won awards at jazz & classical festivals all over the country, and at 17, traveled to Japan with the Monterey Jazz Festival All Star Big Band, and got to play with jazz greats Roy Hargrove, Arturo Sandoval, Joshua Redman & Freddie Hubbard. The bass put him through college at Pepperdine University, and then through a masters in Jazz Studies @ USC, where he studied under jazz bass legend John Clayton.

Although Jazz music has always been his focus, around 20 he was bitten by the elctronic music bug, and by 22 was spinning locally at the college bars, with shows consisting of house dj’s and live acts. Around 24 Joshua & Crew started a night called ‘the Blend’ in Santa Monica, where they featured a mix of deep funky house and live grooves by his band ‘The Vicious Proper’. Since then the Blend dj’s (Hoang Luu, Brandon Goode & Joshua Heath) have been working their way into becoming a staple in the LosAngeles scene, responsible for nights from intimate joints like Temple Bar & the Room, to the big spots like Spundae & Avalon’s patios.

Throughout his time at grad school, Joshua found his way into producing, his new love. “I absolutely love performing, in any genre, on the Bass or the Turntables. But in Grad school I had an assignment which was to compose an original work for 20 piece big band. It was very challenging, but ended up to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. When I stood and listened to the big band play my piece, and all of the ideas that were born in my head came to life, I was overwhelmed with joy! Producing is the composition of the electronic world, and I can’t wait for that rewarding moment when my first track is pounding away on the big system, and hopefully, everyone will be smiling and shakin their buns!!”

Joshua will forever be a musician, and wants to continue progressing his sound, and the fusion of live and electronic music. “It has always been hard for me to focus on one genre, and even with my band the compositions are a fusion of funk, jazz, rock, house and drum&bass. Producing allows me to bring all of the styles I love together. One day I can be jazzy, the next day funky and the next day dark & techy. I can use live drums, bass & keys, or loops and samples…. it’s personally a very liberating experience.”
